Eve's Expansion - Plow Out - 10/31/10

So, for a few weeks now I've been trying to get back out there and plow up the new field we're going to expand Eve's into. I'd be lying if I said I know exactly what I'm doing, but in the past few months I've learned a thing or two about running the plow on the tractor. I know it sounds silly that I don't know these things, but for those of you who don't know me, I didn't grow up on a farm, and no place I've worked has depended upon a tractor to plow its fields. Up until now, Eve's has been dug by hand and with a rototiller when we were able to rent one.
On Halloween I spent about 3 hours on the tractor. I went back through an area I had "practiced" on a few weeks back and plowed up the whole thing. (I even went through and was able to remove a few very large rocks with the bucket.) Then I switched to the discs and went over it to smooth it out. The whole thing came out really nicely, though the area closest to the garden, on the right, has never been worked (since we've been on the land). It was much more difficult getting through there.
I'd like to take one more day out there, hopefully this upcoming weekend to go through it once more with the plow and discs. This was as predicted. Of course, I know I'm running out of time out there. I'd like to get some winter rye seeded too, but it is raining today (Thursday) which could mean the ground will be to wet. So whatever happens this weekend, the rye is going in.
Other notable events in the garden:
- On the same day, Eric boarded up the windows in the shack for the winter.
- For those of you following my late tomato experiment, it didn't work. I need about three extra weeks next year! The craziest part: both beds under cover, but one cover blew off. Several light frosts later, both beds look the same - cover or not.
- Killing frost was on November 3rd.
- Garlic was planted on 10/10/10. About 500 cloves... some of which were saved by Eve's from 2010!
